Gateway IP address

This is not to be confused with the IP address of a Net3 Gateway.

When talking about the gateway IP address, commonly the LAN-address of the gateway/router is meant.

Gateways/Routers that connect two IP-based networks, have two IP addresses, one on each network.

For example, a gateway address like 192.168.1.1 is on one network, and is the address to which traffic is sent on one Local Area Network (LAN). The other IP address is 10.0.1.1. This represents the same gateway on the second LAN.

ETC equipment typically defaults to the device's own IP address if the network does not contain a router and therefore does not have a gateway IP address.
