Universe
In the context of GCE, it refers to a DMX universe or a sACN (Streaming ACN) universe, not the "life, the universe and everything" kind.
This all starts with DMX512 (commonly referred to as simply DMX). DMX is made up of a digital serial string of 512 eight-bit values (0 to 255) that typically repeat around 44 times a second (44Hz) on a single DMX cable.
Each cable contained a "universe" of DMX and a console may output from one to many universes of 512 levels.
To mimic this standard of the protocol and now of the lighting industry, we continue to refer to 512-value groupings as Universes.
sACN is an Ethernet based grouping of levels (512 values at a time) that supports up to 63999 universes of DMX512 over a single Ethernet cable.
